This is to explain “The modem is not connected to the mainframe”. It’s possible that this story will not be funny to you. That means that you have no idea about anything related to computers. Just thinking about this makes me want to laugh even now. I can’t help it.
If your monitor is not connected to what I like to call the “brain”, but the monitor is turned on, it will usually blinky, blinky. This way you know that either the brain is off or the 2 are not connected. Make sense? (If you don’t know what the “brain” is, just quit reading now.)
While working at the pokey, the secretary (not to mention any names, but she still works there) had the problem that her monitor was going blinky, blinky. She called the resident computer guru, JR. But I told her that I could help her that she didn’t need to bother JR, so she told her that and hung up. I cut off the brain and the monitor. Then I giggled all the cords connecting the monitor and the brain and made sure they were tight. Then I cut it back on fully expecting the monitor to fire right up. No such luck. At that point, I was no longer of any service. I was out of the game, she needed an expert for this.
So I tell secretary she will need to call JR back and tell her that I cannot help her. I am sitting right there and hear her tell JR that she doesn’t know what’s wrong and that I tried but couldn’t help. Then she tells JR, “The modem is not connected to the mainframe”. I almost jumped out of my chair. As I sit there I am thinking, I hope JR does not think that is what I told secretary is wrong with her monitor. If it hadn’t been for the fact that I was so worried that JR would think I’m a complete idiot, I would have busted out laughing.
I spoke to JR later and she said she almost lost it right there on the phone. I mean, that’s funny.
OK. The story is over now. If you are still waiting for the punch line or some greater meaning, I’m sorry to say that you’ve missed it. You will never understand what that great saying means. I can see you sitting there pondering and your monitor just going blinky, blinky. And maybe, just maybe, your modem is not connected to your mainframe. Ha! Ha! Now that was funny right there!!!

It's just like I am there all over again! Of course, you can't even begin to explain the fine details like Sgt. Fuzzy getting involved (what a mess that was), the complete lack of understanding on the secretary's part that there IS NO FREAKIN MODEM OR MAINFRAME, and the overwhelming urge I had to just hang up the phone at that ridiculous comment!
I mean, what in the world??!! She did tell me that in the same breath as telling me you were helping her work on it but could not get it going..I can see where you were concerned that I thought you were that goofy!
Funny funny!! I get it and pretty sure I know who you are talking about!!!! Thanks for 'splainin it to me!
