Today was my first day at my new job. I got up early and exercised and had a small breakfast. I used to eat at work, but since I had no idea what was in store for me, I decided to plan ahead. I had already ironed most of the dress clothes in my closet so they would be ready for me in the morning. I put on one of my new suits and some flats. Until I knew what I would be doing, the heels would have to stay at home. I left a couple minutes earlier than usual and I arrived 10 - 15 minutes early.
My first impression of the place was that I was extremely overdressed. No one was in anything like a suit. A couple of the supervisors wore dress pants or a skirt and top. Most of the people were in casual pants and a top. And people were wearing jeans. JEANS!!! One girl even had jeans, t-shirt, tennis shoes and some sort of sweat jacket. You know what I'm talking about. Looks like a sweat shirt, but it has a zipper and a hood. What have I gotten myself into???
I'll tell you what. An office. With a door. Oh my word I could not have expected this. Now I know all my peeps already have an office with a door. Probably much nicer than the one I have now, but this is progress for me people. I've gone from a cubicle with those short walls and someone always up in my business to an office. And there are receptionists that answer the window and the phones. The only way a person can get to me is if they receptionist tells me they are there and go and get them. The only way a person can call me is if they purposefully enter my extension or one of the receptionists transfers a call to me because it's one of my cases. And to top it all off, when I walked into the office, the supervisor had put a little basket with a small bag of chips, a candy bar and some sort of cinnamon bun on my desk. I told them, "I don't know who put this here or if it's meant for me, but I'm taking it".
This afternoon we had a meeting to discuss all sorts of stuff that I have no idea about. But that will come. And it took some time away from me reading policies. Then they tell me, tomorrow morning don't come here at 8. I'm thinking, great, I have to go to the County building or who knows where for who knows what. Well, I'll tell you where and what. Shoney's. For breakfast. Apparently, it's eligibility workers month and they are taking us all to breakfast. On my second day. You can't beat that with a stick!!
So needless to say, I had a great day. And did I mention that I wasn't the least bit nervous when I got there. That is so unusual for me. And when I got home, I was happy as a lark. My drive home was probably a few minutes shorter than it used to be. And less time on the interstate. I am so happy. Everybody is really nice and is making me feel very welcome. It looks like I might have some problems finding supplies, but who cares? They'll just have to buy me a stapler if they can't find one.
And just for the record, no, I am not wearing jeans to work tomorrow. I have nice clothes in my closet, most of which are fairly new. I will wear these until they start making fun of me. Then I'll start wearing jeans. I won't be made fun of!! Even if it is because I'm a hottie!!!

I am SOOO happy that your first day was so great. Sounds like you have a bunch of good people to work with. You're sure moving up in the world, an office, a door, a receptionist, and free breakfast! There is nothing that can replace happiness after leaving work. You'll have bad days, of course, but as long as the good outweighs the bad, it'll all be worth it! Love you!
