How You Like Them Apples?

As I’ve said many times, I am getting my own caseload. It is now in the cabinets in my office. I have one of those wide cabinets with 5 drawers and a 4-drawer file cabinet. I have probably between 300 and 350 cases. I have files coming out my ears. But considering the number of inmates I kept up with, I should be able to handle this. I will not take over this caseload until June 1. Until then, the old caseworker is wrapping things up so I will start out with a clean slate.

I eat lunch in my office with the door slid shut. I have lunch from 12 – 1. I usually go tan and then come back and eat. I get back abound 12:35. I started shutting my door because people would just want to stop and talk to me while I’m eating. I don’t like that. I don’t get a paid lunch. Come back when I’m getting paid to talk to you.

One day last week, the worker that’s handling my caseload knocks and then just opens the door. OK, rude. She acts like she didn’t know I was at lunch even though I’m sitting here with food in front of me. She starts talking about this or that and why do I have my door shut. Then I tell her that I close the door because people will just stop and talk and I like to eat my lunch in peace. So she starts talking about work and I’m not eating because I’m waiting for her to leave. Next thing I know she sits down and continues to talk. She was in here for 15 or 20 mins. Well, guess what. She only gets a 30 minute lunch because she leaves at 4:30. So she was “on the clock” when she was in here wasting my lunch. And all so she can put a file in the cabinet. Like that can’t wait???

I told another worker friend about it. She suggested that I go and plop down in that girl’s office about 4:25 and settle in for a nice long talk. Then when she says she has to go, just mention how she spent my lunchtime chatting me up, so I’m going to spend her off time chatting her up.

How you like them apples baby?

Maybe you'll have to make a sign like we used to tape to your chair here! Or....maybe you'll have to invest in a lock (or a crow bar)!
